The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA) formerly known as the Ministry of Trade and Industry (formed in 1967) was renamed on the 17th of October, 2007. The Ministry of Economic Affairs comprises eight Departments namely, the Departments of Trade, Industry, Cottage, and Small Industry, Intellectual Property, Geology and Mines, Hydropower and Power Systems, Renewable Energy, and Office of Consumer Protection, besides the Directorate Services, Policy and Planning Division, and Internal Audit. Administration and Finance, Human Resources, and Information and Communication Technology all contribute to the success of the Directorate Services. Furthermore, the Ministry operates six regional offices in Thimphu, Phuntsholing, Gelephu, Trongsa, Mongar, and Samdrup Jongkhar.

The ministry via its various departments is responsible for the excellent management of the economy of Bhutan. The objective of the MoEA is to develop a green and self-sufficient economy that is sustained by an information-enabled knowledge society guided by the notion of GNH. Its Mission statement is to create an enabling environment, including institutions and infrastructure for the sustainable growth of the economy through public & private sector development.

Bhutan’s economy is promoted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs through regulation and policy development. Information on regulatory matters about trade, energy, mining, and other industries is managed by the MoEA. Additionally, there are forms for obtaining permission to conduct business in Bhutan.
